Breaking free from corporate life as Cutshop® North Shore

- since November 2015 -

Be My Own Boss

A desire to be his own boss took Dave Sutherland on a search for opportunities around the North Island, and he and his wife Debbie even considered buying a café.  “I remember sitting in the office one day thinking I need to do my own thing – I had always wanted to have a business so I started looking but couldn’t find what I was after,” Dave says.

Dave’s background is Corporate Finance having been CFO of a large trade personnel business for several years and Debbie is a trained nurse.  Originally Dave says he didn’t want to go down the franchise track but saw Cutshop® in NZ Franchise magazine and went to meet the Mt Wellington Franchisee Simon Morton and NZ Franchisor Andre Hofer.

Debbie remembers when he returned from that meeting: “he came back so excited, that I knew straight away Cutshop® had potential,” she says.  “He’s always loved working with wood and this combined with machinery and manufacturing just lit the fire.  We did our research and we signed not long after.”

Very Solid business Model

Dave recalls being told once that accountants can be too analytical as business owners and he says at times he’s no exception – but he also says passion and having a heart for the business is vital.

“I’m very analytical – I took the ruler over the business and found the business model to be very solid.

It’s incredibly well researched, the machinery is the best in the world and this along with the franchise system is the result years of research and good practice.”

As joint franchisees Dave and Debbie work closely alongside each other.  “We are probably quite unique in that we can work together,” says Debbie.  “While Dave is on the shop floor and dealing with customers, I’m managing the office and customer relationships.  Cutshop® is a business that allows a couple to do this, so it’s pretty unique in that regard too.”

time to stretch your wings and do something yourself

With their kids grown up Dave and Debbie wanted a new venture.  “The catalyst was I reached a point where I had to take the leap and work for myself,” says Dave.  “If I didn’t, I knew it was probably never going to happen.

Cutshop® North Shore now has a team of six serving the North Shore out of a near new workshop in John Glenn Avenue, Rosedale.

“Being your own boss is a dream I know a lot of guys have in mid-career – you reach the point when you’ve worked for so many other people, for so long, it’s about time to stretch your wings and do something yourself.  It takes guts but it provides great freedom, although it’s hard work.

I’m definitely more content because I made that decision.”

Cutshop NZ Franchisor

Cutshop NZ Franchisor

Planes, power stations and franchises – cutting a path as NZ Franchisor

The connection between air traffic control and managing a growing franchise network may seem tenuous but it’s stronger than you would think.  NZ Franchisor André Hofer has made this link, starting his career as a qualified aerodrome controller in South Africa to being NZ Franchisor for Cutshop, using the many complementary skills he’s acquired over an eclectic career.

André’s wealth of experience, having managed both small and large businesses, as well as starting his own enterprises, means he’s acquired a sixth sense to quickly recognise and then act on the operational and strategic needs of a business.  “It’s something I’ve picked up having worked in many different places, with huge diversity in types of people and cultures, and a wide range of issues.  Understanding the pain in a business, and applying solutions is key to providing support, winning tenders and contracts, and developing long term relationships."

Some of André’s guidelines as a Franchisor include:

  • See the big picture and while the small detail is important, don’t get hung up on it.
  • Be analytical, apply an effective and efficient lens to the business, know what makes a business tick, get out and find work, get money in and always focus on return on investment.
  • It’s important to wear many hats, and wear them well.
  • Learn how to negotiate and make a deal, and if this doesn’t get come naturally, get help.
  • Be innovative and look for better ways to do things all the time – and if it’s broken, fix it quickly.
  • Be time management focused and manage every day effectively.
  • It’s all about service, service and service – one of the lessons from Disney!

André’s knowledge gleaned from the largest to the smallest of organisations is helping Cutshop grow its business across New Zealand, by supporting franchisees who are in business for themselves, but not by themselves.

As the Cutshop network develops, all the skills André learned as an air traffic controller are returning.  “I am managing different opportunities at various levels and from different directions, and looking to land them one after the other,” he says.  “It’s gone full circle – it was once planes and power stations, now its franchises - same process, but an entirely different industry.”
