On-trend kitchens.

In the fifth of our blog series focused on current kitchen renovation trends, based on survey data from Houzz, we look at kitchen colour, materials and lighting.

After a number of years when light, white and bright has been the style of choice for kitchens, it looks like darker, moodier colours are on their way back into the renovation palette.

Stormy blues and forest greens are increasingly finding popularity as choices for kitchen walls and cabinetry.

Although 50% of renovated kitchens are still tending towards the more neutral, lighter colour range, whites are warming up and greys are moving to greige (grey/beige).  This change is also being reflected in warmer on-trend tile colours and designs.

In terms of cabinetry style, a balance between the timelines traditional and a contemporary look is definitely leading the way. Termed ‘transitional’, this is the ‘happy medium’ of kitchen design.

Tiled and glass splash backs are still a very popular feature, but these are being extended into full counter to ceiling features, creating a feeling of greater space.  Geometric patterns can often make splash backs into a real design feature.

The most popular appliances this year are cooktops, dishwashers and range hoods, with most (67%) choosing stainless steel over more traditional white.

Cooktops are being replaced in almost 90% of renovated kitchens and many people are choosing to move to induction (42%) and gas (35%) hobs.

The vast majority of kitchen renovators are also replacing benchtops with engineered quartz and laminates in whites, greys and black.  Natural wood is on the come-back, bringing warmth and character to flooring and cabinetry (following a bathroom trend for lighter natural wood features).

Medium and light stained, and unstained hardwood is the top choice for flooring (30%), followed by hard-wearing laminates as a less expensive and durable alternative.

As cabinet design becomes more space-efficient, with deep drawer organisers and pull-out trays and shelves making the most of every nook and cranny, this frees up wall space, allowing some designers to lose the upper cabinets and create window walls that introduce more natural light.

The two most popular lighting choices continue to be recessed lighting (67%) and pendants (53%) and custom handles are often chosen to give a personalised finish to the room.
