Their 1950’s house has a cramped and dysfunctional kitchen and their garage wasn't big enough for their car. Instead of expanding the kitchen, they opted to convert the garage into a spacious, modern kitchen area. 

In New Zealand, it's crucial to ensure that any conversion complies with permitted development guidelines. Fortunately for Emma and Ian, their project fell within these guidelines, sparing them the need for lengthy planning permissions.

The renovation began by removing walls between the garage, kitchen, dining room, and hallway, creating a light-filled and expansive kitchen-diner. To ensure structural integrity, they reinforced the open space with RSJs and cleverly incorporated a stud wall to create a separate utility room and downstairs toilet.

To achieve the modern kitchen look, they opted for sleek, handleless high-gloss grey and white units with integrated appliances. Adding versatility, they incorporated a kitchen island that doubles as a breakfast bar.

To soften the modern feel, they introduced warm elements like wooden worktops and engineered wooden flooring, statement brick wall, copper pendant lights and industrial-style furniture to complete the overall look and feel.

In just 9 short weeks, Emma and Ian’s kitchen garage has been completed. Their once cramped kitchen and underused garage were replaced with a sleek, modern kitchen diner – the perfect space for entertaining and enjoying their home.
