Floating bedside tables

You can’t fake passion. Talk to Andre Wentzel and it’s easy to see why his customers love him – his can-do attitude and impressive knowledge of all things cabinetry makes him a stand-out candidate for any reno job.

Andre Wentzel, owner of Aotearoa Cabinetry Installs, is an expert cabinet maker who specialises in kitchen upgrades, wardrobes and vanities. He works in partnership with Cutshop North Shore and is available if you’ve got an idea for a project, but you’d rather someone else do the handling.

Recently he helped one of our customers create floating bedside tables for a master bedroom. The result was simply stunning - the perfect blend of style and functionality.

Being positioned on either side of the bed in an A-frame style house, the installation of the tables made for an interesting challenge. Using MDF sourced from Cutshop, Andre put together the carcass (in sea fog colour) before applying the bamboo top.

I had to make sure both tables were the same level on either side of the bed while also making sure the angle of the A-frame was taken into consideration.

Next, Andre turned his attention to the laundry, where the aim was to reduce clutter and create an organised storage system.

Working with Cutshop to finalise the design and source the materials, Andre was able to successfully install a utility area with a separate cupboard for an ironing board,  as well as a designated space for laundry detergent and other necessities. MDF was the material of choice here, again in sea fog colour.

Separate floating shelves were installed to maximise space – the material of choice was veneer, in american white oak colour.

Next up was the vanity. The doors were made using veneer (american white oak). Danish oil was used to create a flawless finish.

Andre works with just about any material, but favours natural timbers, including veneer.

“It’s slightly more expensive and takes a bit longer to get the finished product, but I like the feel and look of it.”

At the end of the day, seeing a customer satisfied with his work is what he loves most about the job.

The nice part of it is when you’ve finished the job and you can see the end product and the client is happy…that’s very rewarding.
