Laundry renovations.

Let's face it. Laundry rooms aren't typically the place you'd choose to spend your time. Often a dumping ground for dirty washing and objects you haven't found a home for yet, it's no wonder many people like to keep their laundry doors firmly shut.

But what would it mean if you gave yours a makeover?

For one Auckland couple, a baby on the way was the perfect excuse to do just that.

Their laundry - a small room with cupboards and old, worn out shelving - was impractical. There was no space for a dryer, vacuum cleaner or ironing board. The pair knew more storage space was needed, so they approached woodworker and business owner Aviv May (tel. 0204117958) for his ideas.

I suggested removing the whole wall, opening the space and making something built in.

In doing so, Aviv knew he could utilise the height and width of the entire space, creating extra room for the couple to store their belongings.

They liked the idea, and Aviv approached Cutshop with his measurements to get started. Having worked closely with Cutshop for some of his other projects, Aviv says he appreciates the high-quality workmanship tailored to his exact specifications.

"Without the precision of the CNC machine it would have been too challenging to come up with the result," he says.

The project took a lot of planning - "there were a lot of conversations... we talked about different options, and spent time looking at samples etc."

Moisture resistant laminated MDF was the material of choice, selected because of it's affordability and stability, as well as the fact that it can be exposed to water without swelling.

A floating bench was added for a 'laundry folding' station. Its structure sits inside the wood, making it both sturdy and stylish. A drying rack with steel beams was also installed.

Aviv says the couple were “over the moon” with the end result.

It’s very satisfying to help people and they really appreciate it.
