Home library.

Bespoke bookshelf: the perfect storage solution.

If you've got too many books and not enough places for them to go, consider whether an in-home library could help solve your storage woes.

That's what one Auckland couple dreamed up when they decided to convert an unused room into a designated study space and library.

The pair engaged woodworker and business owner Aviv May to help with their project last year. Featuring floor to ceiling cabinets, shelves and a couple of window seat benches, Aviv says it's one of the biggest - and most interesting - projects he's ever done.

Aviv started his business - Handy May (tel. 0204117958) - when he moved to New Zealand in 2017. He specialises in carpentry, cabinet making and refurbishing furniture, and works closely with Cutshop for a number of his projects. It means he doesn't need his own costly machinery, and the wood is always cut to the exact measurements specified in his designs.

I’ve had experience with other workshops in the past, but what I like about Cutshop is they come up with suggestions and really try to understand what I want to achieve. They’re very flexible, very responsive, willing to help, and open to ideas.

The in-house library is made from high-quality coloured MDF, with a Tahoe walnut finish.

Aviv says it gives the room a "warm cozy feeling".

They - the homeowners - end up hanging out there all the time because it created a very welcoming space

The room has been decorated with cushions and bean bags to complete the feel, and LED lighting has been installed along the shelves to make it even more unique.

Aviv says he will keep using Cutshop for future projects. He mostly works with private homeowners who value craftmanship, meticulousness and a bespoke product. He says the quality of material from Cutshop is top-notch, and he enjoys seeing customers happy with their finished products.

I listen carefully to my my customers and always try to give what they want in terms of functionality and beauty.
