AV Cabinet

How to design an entertainment cabinet.

Enjoying a glass of wine, with your feet up listening to your favourite music or losing a couple of hours enjoying a great show on the TV is, for many, an ideal way to spend an evening.

Quite often our entertainment system is the focal point of the room and in many cases, comes with not only the sound system or TV but also the extras of records, speakers, remotes, and cords.

An entertainment unit is a wonderful way to house all of these extras whilst reflecting your style and house aesthetics too.

Andre Wentzel, Director of Aotearoa Cabinetry Installs who specialise in creating bespoke furniture, came to Cutshop® North Shore to produce a custom entertainment unit for his client to house his record player, speakers and collection of records.

He wanted it made out of White HPL Birch for the doors with timber legs.

Cutshop® North Shore took the design, programmed and cut it perfectly to the specifications and the result was this very stylish, modern but contemporary looking entertainment unit.

The white of the ply drawers contrasts so nicely with the darker wood of the record player and speaker making it a beautiful focal point in the room. The client was thoroughly pleased with the finished unit and we agree that it looks amazing in place.

Here are our top tips to get started:

Step one: Measure, measure, measure.

Start with your room and plan where you want the entertainment unit to go, remembering to take into consideration the depth of the finished piece and locality to plug sockets.

If you are looking to design an entertainment unit for your TV then measure your TV, both the width and diagonal of the screen. This will enable you to correctly plan for the size of the entertainment unit it will stand on, allow for at least two extra inches at either end of where the TV will be placed.

Is your TV wall mounted? Then you simply need to measure for your own aesthetics and how you would like it to look. Flat-screen TVs allow for slimline units which look great and protrude less.

If you are housing solely a sound system then plan for the size of the speakers. Will they be sitting on the unit or by the side?

Step two: Choose your material.

There are plenty of choices from hardwood to Plywood to MDF. If you are unsure then let our experts help you. Their knowledge and expertise will put your mind at rest.

Step three: Plan for airflow and cord storage.

Keep unruly and unsightly wires hidden to create a seamless look, and make sure that any AV equipment has plenty of airflow to move around to prevent overheating.

Step four: Contact us to get started.

With four factories across the North Island and the ability to deliver the flat pack to anywhere in the country, you don’t need to compromise on the entertainment unit for you.
