Pivot cabinet that doubles storage options.
Alan Owen, director of Marcel Group joinery services, has turned a practical storage design into an innovative way to tidy up messy files and folders. The Marcel Group specialises in providing mobile joinery services in the Auckland area, offering a range of services from installations and renovations to minor handyman jobs.
Recently a customer needed a custom-built unit incorporating a cupboard and some bookshelves. As design discussions progressed, it became clear that there would be some wasted space behind the unit.
Alan suggested creating a pivot cabinet to double the available shelf space, creating a hidden set of shelves tucked away out of sight.
The client loved the idea. As an electrician running his own business, he saw the design as a great way to tuck away all his ugly but necessary business files and folders.
Alan based the shelving unit on a pivot design, capable of bearing up to 300kg in weight. There were a few challenges to be overcome along the way but the result was stunning.
Alan is already discussing other applications for the design, as a hideaway shoe cupboard or coat hanging space, for other customers.
As the Marcel Group has grown, Alan has found it more efficient to get rid of his own workshop and outsource to Cutshop, saving time and money on machinery. Now Alan works with Cutshop Mt Wellington as one of his key suppliers.
“I use google sketch to work up the designs then send them off to Cutshop. They get the job turned around in four to five working days. This gives my team more time to spend actually carrying out the building work and installations on-site.”
