A kitchen cutting collaboration

Greg Dickinson from Auckland was recently in the process of having a new house built for him and his wife to live in for their retirement, in Gulf Harbour.

Whilst the house was being built, Greg set himself up to complete the fit-outs for the interior by himself, confident that his background in making kitchens for himself in the past, and working as a Mechanical Design Engineer, would come to great use.

Greg’s expertise is in the area of designing food processing equipment through his business ‘Strategic Technology’, and so, he utilised his design knowledge to play a particularly active role in the development of his own new kitchen.

The perfect cutting partner

When it came to finding a company to help him with the manufacturing of his designs, Greg came across Cutshop® online and made some inquiries as to what they could achieve together.

Once the ball started rolling, Karl Ross from Cutshop® Mt Wellington sat down with Greg to discuss the designs and made some minor tweaks, ensuring the difficult corners and the benchtop-mounted pantry were being addressed in the best way possible.

I’d had experience with AutoCad modelling before, and came to Karl with my 2D designs. He refined them and swiftly turned them into 3D designs.

Having also had some of his own experience with CNC cutting machines before, initially, Greg was not aware they could cut through melteca paneling, having only ever used them for cutting plastics and stainless steel. He’d also not used them to cut out such large-scale projects, either.

So, when he discovered the Cutshop® team could cut all the wood for his project, he was thrilled!

Greg was able to supply his own materials, and before long, Karl’s 3D designs were turned into a physical output. It all ran very smoothly.

A flawless finish

When it came to delivery,  Greg was absolutely amazed at not only the fast turnaround time, but just how flawless the final cuts were.

There were absolutely no faults. Everything lined up perfectly. Sometimes with these things, for such a large amount of cutting, you expect there to be one or two minor issues somewhere, but I didn’t find a single mistake.
— Greg

To finish everything off, Cutshop® provided the hardware (hinges and sliders) and from there, Greg’s kitchen came together nicely with assembly taking 3-4 days.

I’ve come away with a new appreciation for how much can be achieved with CNC cutting. In the past, I’ve seen other people go through the house-build process, and the experience has been painful for them. Amongst every fit-out I did for the inside of our house, the kitchen was by far the easiest, and that’s thanks to Cutshop.
— Greg

It’s super rewarding for Karl and the Cutshop® team to see such a fantastic project come together, and we are happy Greg can now enjoy being in his very own kitchen!
