DIY legacy.

Walking around Thor Besier's home in Auckland's harbourside suburb of Devonport, you'd be hard-pressed to find furniture he hasn't built from scratch.

From drawers and cupboards, desks and an impressive bookshelf, Thor has made his house a home by undertaking unique building projects that stand out from the norm.

Thor's passion for DIY would be hard to beat. As a young boy he watched his parents undertake renovation projects at their Tasman home on weekends. Building their own furniture was just part of the norm.

Now, he hopes to leave a lasting impression on his own kids, aged 7, 12 and 13.

It’s just the way we do things. It costs you more to make it yourself because of the material cost, but if you buy cheap, pre-made furniture you don’t get the quality.

Thor recently engaged Cutshop to help with building a bookshelf in his home. He had seen a design he liked on Pinterest, but because of the design's complexity he needed his measurements to be exact.

I’m handy with a skill saw but it’s not going to give me millimeter accuracy.
— Thor Besier

He says once the design was complete, all that was left to do was decide on the material.

As the room has a piano in it, he decided on dark form plywood to match. The cupboard faces have been stained black to give the bookshelf a "unique finish" against the white walls.

Elements of the design are consistent throughout Thor's home, including desks and shelves he built for his son. An outdoor studio - also built with help from Cutshop - has a similar feel.

Thor says putting it together was easy. Cutshop predrilled holes to keep the process simple.

"They’re just separate boxes that you fit and screw together."

The family now use the room as their "cozy space". Thor plays his guitar in there, and in winter they set up a projector.

He recommends Cutshop to friends and family.

Even looking at new kitchens and that kind of stuff...it’s not hard to think of the design and do the measurements and say this is what I’d like..if you have the idea, Cutshop make everything else easy.
