Elegant furniture.

Small business punching above its weight.

Creating simple, elegant furniture is the passion that drives New Zealand designer, Ben Glass. Since he set out under his own name in 2010, Ben has focused on honouring the natural diversity presented by each individual piece of timber.

However, when you’re running a business with a small number of staff, the ability to produce multiple examples of each design efficiently can make a big difference to your bottom line — and that’s where Cutshop steps in.

Based in Auckland, Ben Glass Furniture designs and manufactures contemporary high-quality solid-wood furniture and they have been working with Cutshop Mt Wellington since late 2014.

According to Ben, Cutshop helps him maintain good relationships with clients when big tough-to-produce orders come in. He recently received an order for a large batch of his Houndstooth Chair — made from either oak, puriri or lacquered birch.

Ben can easily manufacture small jobs efficiently in-house but for larger jobs he needs the efficiencies that a CNC machine can provide.

I supplied the timber along with a CAD file, which I had programmed with cutting instructions for this job, and Cutshop cut out the chair sides.

Cutshop costs me much less to produce large orders. Their labour costs are cheaper than mine because a computer does all the thinking. The beauty of the service is that they can manufacture repeat jobs quickly.

It’s quite the opposite for a small business like mine, repeating the same process over and over burns a lot of time and money. I find the guys at Cutshop very helpful and approachable — they make my work much easier.
