A Retreat in Nature

Andre de Graaf came to Cutshop Mt Wellington for help with a special project - a cosy holiday home where his family can enjoy comfortable solace and leisure.

For Andre, his bach (and eventually longer term retirement home) is inspired by the surrounding natural environment which is relaxing and has a good amount of natural finishes.

In keeping with its design, the bach draws inspiration from nature in many of its aspects. The bathrooms are designed in a semi "cave-like" experience - as if showering under a natural waterfall - which is why the finishes are typically darker and with natural stone and timber to capture the essence of a cave's ambiance.

The lounge is particularly created and designed to have a warm and natural feel using mid tones in its timber and wall colours.

I particularly like the way the built-in lounge suite has come up. It takes a mid-century design approach with integrated shelving and drawers for books/ornaments and storage. While the timber work is largely finished, we are still awaiting the soft furnishings to complete the look

The kitchen by contrast is well lit naturally and the clean lines for the cabinetry speak to a fresher look associated with food preparation.

With a desire to create contrast between the materials and textures used, Andre decided to have the colour and texture of timber mixed for variety, while natural concrete and deep greens make a harmonious contrast to the wood.

Natural finish Beech ply was used for the kitchen cabinetry while the lounge and bathroom cabinetry achieves a deeper/warmer feel through the use of Joubert Gaboon plywood.

The overall design for the cabinetry takes a simple yet practical approach.

Andre says Cutshop® has been great to deal with and would have no hesitation in recommending Cutshop® to friends and would definitely be continuing to use them as he complete further projects.

As an architect I am often designing bespoke pieces and while there have been the odd hiccup nothing has been problematic to sort out and they have always responded promptly to rectify any issues.
