Beautiful bamboo

There’s nothing new about bamboo, not really anyway. A product that’s been around in the building world for the past two decades, it is predominately used for flooring as it is long-lasting, hard-working and very durable. Bamboo is an attractive and stunning alternative to hardwood and plywood products. It's strong, sustainable, looks great and is so versatile.

Bamboo can take the knocks just like any hardwood and has recently seen a surge in popularity, not just because of its hardwood-like qualities but also due to its sustainable and more environmentally friendly characteristics. Bamboo panels are ideal for any wooden application - from wall coverings and ceilings, bench tops and kitchen joinery to shelving, furniture, staircases to doors, shelving and more.

With the rise of ‘Green Living’ and a desire to create stylish but natural interior designs with minimal impact on the environment, bamboo comes at the top of the list for creating an eco-friendly home.

Our bamboo panels are sourced from Plantation Bamboo, and can be cut effortlessly on our CNC machinery. The edges can be custom routered. Bamboo surfaces are usually oiled or polished for best finish results.

Hard wearing solid timber

When our Cutshop Mt Wellington, franchisee Simon Morton, needed a new desk, he had everything he needed on hand! Simon chose bamboo as opposed to the more commonly-used MDF and here’s why:

I loved the idea of using bamboo because it’s a hard wearing, solid timber that’s naturally beautiful. It looks great when you varnish the edges and expose the grain. You can introduce curves and simply sandpaper to smooth off rather than edge-banding. I also like the fact that the desk has been made to my own specifications because we custom-designed, cut and assembled it all at Cutshop.

Solid wood finish

A customer of handcrafted furniture maker Saxon Steelworks fell in love with bamboo ply and asked them to make a set of tables to match her existing style. She wanted a mix of modern and industrial, so they used NZ RHS steel, and had the pieces zinc and powder-coated to add longevity. The accurate cutting and clean edging by Cutshop Waikato made it possible to get four side tables, a large display table, an entrance table and a double layer coffee/tv table out of a single 2400 x 1200 sheet.

A Sustainable Cabinet Material

For those who are wanting to revamp their kitchen cabinets but are searching for a more environmentally friendly and sustainable material, bamboo is the material for you.

Very beautiful, hardwearing and sustainable, bamboo is known for its rapid growth phase which, depending on the species, can grow between 5 and 100 cm per day.

It can be harvested at around 4-5 years compared to that of a typical hardwood such as Oak which takes up to 80 years to reach maturity. This rapid growth makes Bamboo a great choice for building and design.

During its growth, it absorbs more CO2 than released making it carbon neutral and is a great material for those building homes with a zero carbon footprint.

Combined with the fact it grows up to 1 metre per week, bamboo does not require fertilizers or pesticides to assist its growth, making it even more of an eco-friendly building material option.

Why Choose Bamboo Cabinetry

It is easy to be creative with bamboo. A material that can be available in different colours, stains really well and features stunning vertical or compressed graining, an alternative to wood cabinetry, that makes a unique cabinetry look.

Due to its beautiful graining, it works really well against a contrasting countertop and produces a stunning look when paired with a vibrant splashback in the kitchen or bathroom.

Bamboo doesn’t expand or contract in the heat or cold making it perfect for those high use areas in the kitchen and bathroom. It is a healthier option for the home that is easy to clean and maintain and is easy to work with.

Still unsure of whether bamboo is the material of choice for you? Get in touch with our team at Cutshop® and we will work with you to make sure that you choose the right material for your project.
