How to Choose Cabinetry that Lasts Outdoors

The quickest way to shorten the life of an outdoor kitchen is to build it like an indoor one.

It's an easy mistake to make. A roof over the deck makes the space feel like part of the house, and the board that works so well in your kitchen looks like the obvious choice. But as far as cabinetry is concerned, under the pergola is still outside, and indoor board isn't made for it.

At Cutshop®, we build outdoor kitchens from materials designed for outdoor use, cut to fit your space exactly. Here's why that matters, and what building with us looks like.

The outdoor kitchen you build twice

MDF, particleboard and melamine-faced board are made and rated for interior use. Even moisture-resistant grades, the ones built for kitchens, bathrooms and laundries, are ruled out for exterior applications by the people who make them. Put them outside and they're up against conditions they were never designed for. Wood-based board that keeps getting wet swells and eventually breaks down, and in cabinetry that's cut to fit, a panel that swells no longer fits. That's the real cost of the wrong board. It isn't the price of the sheet. It's the time and money of doing the job a second time.

Build it from a panel made for outdoors

Our outdoor kitchens are built from StyleLex, a weatherproof panel system designed for covered outdoor areas. It solved a problem our team knew well. As Cutshop® programmer Karl Ross puts it: "Finally, we have a product that can be used outside."

Here's what StyleLex gives you:

  • It's made to resist fading. Doors and fronts have a UV-resistant HPL surface, which offers superior resistance to weathering, wear and colour fading.

  • It stands up to water. Every panel is built on a weatherproof composite core. In the manufacturer's testing, door and face panels withstood 7 days fully submerged with no changes, and carcass panels withstood 30 days.

  • It looks like it belongs. Go for a clean, minimalist look, a classic woodgrain or a textured surface, from solid colours like Alabaster and Slate to woodgrains like Blonde Oak and Southern Walnut.

  • It's easy to live with. StyleLex is easy to clean and stain-resistant, which is exactly what you want next to a BBQ.

In Karl's words: "Now we can recommend this as an option and feel comfortable. It will hold up to the moisture and still look stylish."

Cut to fit your deck, not a catalogue

Outdoor spaces don't come in standard sizes. There's a post where a cabinet should go, a downpipe on the back wall, a step down to the lawn. Off-the-shelf flat-pack comes in fixed sizes, which is how you end up with gaps, awkward heights and wasted space.

Every panel we cut is CNC-cut to your exact measurements, so the cabinetry fits the space you actually have. It's planned around the appliances you've chosen, whether that's a BBQ, a sink or an outdoor fridge, rather than you choosing appliances to suit a standard cabinet.

The layout is yours to decide, too: drawers sized for specific BBQ tools, a cupboard that hides the bin, storage for outdoor plates and glasses so they're not carried back and forth from the indoor kitchen.

That precision is what our customers notice. As Bryan, a Cutshop homeowner customer, put it: "All the cuts are to the millimetre. Everything is really sharp. No edges are missing."

And there's no minimum order. A simple BBQ surround is just as welcome as a full outdoor kitchen.

Guidance from people who know the material

Every material has rules, and StyleLex is no different. It's designed for covered, shaded areas with no direct sun at any time of year. It isn't meant for bench tops or exposed gable ends. Doors have size limits, and near a gas BBQ the installation has to follow the appliance manufacturer's instructions.

You don't need to know any of that before you come in. It's what our team plans around with you, so the design suits your space before a single panel is cut. Cutshop® has been cutting cabinetry for New Zealand homes since 2009, and many of our team have spent years refining their craft right here. Outdoor kitchens are where that experience earns its keep.

Bring photos of the space, including what's overhead, and your appliance details. We'll work through the rest with you.

Easy from first visit to finished kitchen

There's no appointment needed. Come into one of our factories in the North Shore, Mt Wellington or Waikato, see the materials, talk to our team, and leave with a clear plan for what's next.

From there, your panels are CNC-cut, edge-banded and labelled for straightforward assembly, then delivered anywhere in New Zealand or picked up from your local factory. Build it yourself, have your builder or joiner put it together, or ask us about assembly.

If a measurement turns out to be wrong after your order is cut, get in touch as soon as possible and we'll do our best to recut the piece quickly. And if you can't get to a factory, upload your measurements, sketches or designs for a no-obligation quote, or call us on 0800 CUTSHOP.
