Dinorockers.

Dinorockers uses CNC prototyping to start a new business.

‘Think it, Make it’ is our thing at Cutshop.  Nigel Binks took us up on this offer when he set out to create a brand-new line of rocking horses with a difference.

Dinorockers are a combination of two of Nigel’s childhood favourites – rocking horses and dinosaurs.  He had the idea for the product one wet day during January this year and he hasn’t looked back since.

Lucky for us that he heard a Cutshop radio advert shortly afterwards and got in touch with our Waikato franchise – then the project really got rocking!

Nigel brought us his hand-drawn designs and a prototype. After some discussion, we translated that into a computer programme and cut the templates out of plywood sheets.

Cutshop Waikato were really brilliant! They were enthusiastic and keen to make it work.  It was the first time I had done anything like this.

Without Cutshop, the idea would have stayed in the development stage. They have helped me to turn a creative idea into something that is commercially viable.

The design is repeatable and the cuts are consistent every time. We can respond to a changing volume of orders and the design is easily scalable, so we can alter dimensions and create a range of models and stencils.

With 16 orders currently waiting to be filled and a website in development, Dinorockers is shaping up to be a tidy little business.

Dinorockers have been created for children aged between two and seven years old.  Nigel ‘road-tested’ his concept, design and colour schemes with a group of nephews, nieces and pre-school children belonging to friends – so he’s confident that the Dinorocker will get a thumbs-up from his target audience.

“Each Dinorocker is personalised. Parents can choose the colour scheme and we create an ID card for each one, complete with a unique name, personality and other characteristics.  It’s a lot of fun.”

Nigel and his partner have big hopes for this business.  Their website is due to launch shortly and until then, orders can be placed through the Dinorockers Facebook page or via orders@dinorockers.co.nz
